hello guys i am looking for any one who has knowledge of the history of this Totem, i know that it originates from Swaziland through the HLATSHWAYO line but i am trying to bridge the gap....
ReplyDeleteYes Ngaras ancestor originated from Swaziland. Came with wagons were working for whites. Infact they were 2 brothers thats what I heard. Settled in chibi at first- Bhati area and were later driven to Gokomere. Settled there. Married king s daughter ,settled in area stretching feom gokomere to zimuto. Zimuto was a name given to the ancestor after his cattle were run by the wagon on railway line. He was angry and called the commissioner and said to him come and take Mazimuto acho meaning soup. Thats where the name zimuto came from. There is only one Ngara in zimbabwe and came from the same father. Were disenfranchised by the ndebele war and some were captured and went to matebeleland. The maposas in matebeleland and those in masvingo are the same people. They are related. No any other maposa. Initially it was nkala but makaranga could mot say la and end up saying ngara. .....
DeleteThere seems to be a huge confusion here Maphosa from Swaziland(those in zim too) and maposa( ngara)are two different people and families the name ( Maphosa) is what they have in common
DeleteThe Ngara Govera people claim a Swazi or Sotho origin but this can't be proven geneologically. It was prestigious to be associated with the powerful kings from the south.
DeleteIf you have links or references to any material please assist, i am trying to piece together the whole story.
DeleteWe are all sure and certain of the Kings Child story and all, but i would want to know the story before all that happned.
Where were our Ancestors before that.

ReplyDeleteChikandamiseve. I'm proud to be maposa
ReplyDeleteIt is said in other traditional folklores that many men had failed to break the virginity of the kings daughter until our ancestor did it and blood gushed out . Zimuto reffering to the thick rich emmision. Ngara men are repited for their sexual prowess and fertility

ReplyDeleteThere are 2 different theories here , so did the Ngara people originate from Swaziland or not , are the Ngara people originally Shona or not ?
ReplyDeleteThat claim of Swazi/Sotho origin can not be geneologically proven, it was prestigious to be associated with the powerful kings in the south. Ngara or Govera people came from Shava Hills near Murambinda in Central Buhera.
DeleteNgara Govere people were seeking refuge in Buhera, "Zimuto and his successors operated from Mazambara hill, discussed below. It was on the basis of this status as mukuwasha
DeletewaMambo, (the Mambo’s son-in-law) that Zimuto thrived in this region, but this could
only last as long as the Mambo’s patronage subsisted. By 1866 this was no longer possible
as the Mambo was himself in hiding in the Mavangwe hills in Buhera and later that year
forced to surrender to the Ndebele, after which he went into exile in Gutu until his death."
The Ngara people as far as I have researched come from Swatini and they are of Hlachwayo blood

ReplyDeleteI would like to know if there is anyone who can help? Semuera Ngara, my family surname is Mushoriwa in Zimbabwe but l don't have much information about them.lf someone knows of them please help. A family tree would go a long way. The Mushoriwa family is also located in Chivhu, l don't know of Masvingo?
ReplyDeleteThe history of this lineage is closely entwined with the broader history of the region. It formed part of the various marauding Nguni bands, alongside the Ndebele and Shangaan. This particular group, the Swati, was led by a formidable warrior woman named Inyamazane. She is remembered for her role in the 1834 killing of Chirisamhuru, an act carried out with the assistance of the Mhari people, who had long harboured a grudge dating back to the 1680s when their ancestor Chikanga was slain by Dombo.
ReplyDeleteInyamazane is believed to have personally torn open Chirisamhuru’s chest to verify whether he indeed had two hearts, a claim made by his followers in praise, who called him Moyondizvo (Double-hearted – 'ane moyo miviri, ndizvo'). At the heart of this conquest was an unholy alliance between Inyamazane and Gomarara Mupetabere (Bere in short), Chirisamhuru’s nephew through Murambwi’s youngest wife Ndhari (Ndhari is the mother of Bere who was later inherited by Murambwi's eldest son Mudzungairi).
As part of the alliance, Inyamazane’s general, Hlatswayo, was rewarded with five Mhari women who had lived as timbwa/mbonga (hermits/nuns). These were Murambinda, the barren one who had been secluded due to her inability to bear children for the Mhari general Ngundu (also known as Chinengudu); Chivavarira, famed for her light complexion and the namesake of Chivavarira Hill (Chivavarirachamavhumashava); Shangwa and Marota (also called Madota), who were custodians of family charms/makona; and Chirungurira, a slave girl widely believed to have served as a spy observing affairs beyond the hermitage/shrine. These women were known as 'timbwa' or 'mbonga', meaning “preserved ones”, a term indicating their dedication as brides of the ancestors, never to be married by mortals. All five were given to Hlatswayo, regardless, as tribute for his leader Inyamazane, who is also thought to have been his mother, in gratitude for helping Bere overthrow Chirisamhuru and thus bringing an end to Rozvi dominance.
In addition to the women, Hlatswayo was granted settlement rights over what used to be Chadokwenda’s parish, a territory remembered as 'Bawa neMazambara'. Meanwhile, Bere and his siblings—Mudzungairi, Rera and Barapata—claimed lands formerly belonging to Tohwechipi. These stretched from Chinhango Hill in the south, through the mountains of Ruvuri, Nehanda/Nyanda, Mashava, Gato and Guruguru, up to the Rukuruva plains in the north. It was here that Barapata ultimately fell to Ndebele raiders led by General Mgandane, formerly known as Magundhani, a traitor from Chivi. Mgandane traced his roots to Chivi’s uncle Kuvhirimara, who had long sought revenge for the assassination of his ancestor by Chirogwe (nicknamed Masundanyika) and his brothers—sons of Tavengegweyi, a half-brother of Bere. Tavengegweyi’s mother was Ndhari, Murambwi’s last wife, who had been inherited by his eldest son Mudzungairi and subsequently gave birth to both Tavengegweyi and Madan’ombe.
Tohwechipi, for his part, was heir to Chisimahuru II and served as governor, while Chadokwenda is believed to have been either his brother or son. Tensions eventually flared between Bere and Hlatswayo, prompting Bere to forge yet another unholy alliance—this time with Mzilikazi—in order to suppress dissent among the Swati. Later still, Bere joined forces with the infamous Duma brothers in what became a successful mission to resist Ndebele expansion eastwards.
It is not enough to narrate the history of the Mukuwashawamambo without unravelling the identity of the Mambo. Peter Garlake and Paul Sinclair (BSAC-sponsored cult historians) will tell you about their mission to deliberately downplay Mambos Bere and Matibi in a bid to erase their memories from Forts Victoria and Tuli, respectively, because they were fierce contenders against European occupation, having themselves been to the Cape Colony in the 1870s for unsuccessful indoctrination/catechisation.
