Umsebenzi Wokubuyisa Umuntu Ongasekho

English Summary

According to a Zulu culture when someone died and was buried, after a certain period of time (depending to different clan beliefs), there should be a traditional ceremony to be done for the purpose of reuniting that person with other ancestors.

The family uses a branch of Zyzyphus mucronata, the Buffeldsdorn to attract ancestral spirits from a grave site or an old kraal to a new kraal. A cow is slaughtered for this traditional ceremony, but before it is slaughtered the family has to consult with ancestors to inform them of what they are planning to do and a goat is slaughtered for this purpose.

If the dead person died in an accident, the family should first perform cleansing ceremony before entering the family yard with the branch of the tree. A goat is slaughtered also for this, it should not be consumed by family members. When everything is done then the bull or cow should be slaughtered.

Family members can put goat skin around their wrists and the oldest should put on the cattle skin. Incense is also burned to communicate with ancestors during this period.
