Background

There are many different kinds of plants that are used by traditional healers to heal diseases and there are some that people can use on their own without consulting a traditional healer.

Some plants are used as intelezi to keep evil away, calm fear; and shape the future. Others are used for more scientific purposes to cure many illnesses. These herbal remedies can be prepared in many different ways the main method are powdered medicine.

Liliacea lancifolium (Ilabatheka)

This plant grows in a well drained soil around the mountains and in the forest. It has green leaves and it produces a yellow flower when it is ready to be used. They grind the root of liliacea lancifolium and boil it. When it is ready the person who’s suffering from sharp pain (isibhobo) can drink the medicine. The sharp pain is associated with witchcraft. The witch may use the medicine and a sharp object to point their victims or calling their names without their knowledge. The root of this medicine is round and yellow. This plant can also be used as tea by boiling the leaves and drink it.

Aloe (Inhlaba)

Cut the leaves of aloe, put it on an empty pot, and put it on the stove or on the fire, let the leaves burn until it is black then pour a small amount of water and start tasting medicine with finger tips while it is boiling. Ritualistically, to treat mysterious allergies and epilepsy, chorea, apoplexy etc.

Unsukumbili

This plant grows near the river. It has green leaves and it produce round yellow flowers. Cut the leaves, grind them and mix with warm water then it is ready. Enema or calorie absorption can be used to relieve constipation and for cleansing of the lower bowel, also employed in cases of inflammation of organs of pelvic cavity and for the spinal column.

Ubulawu

This medicine is used by young men to make themselves clean and to attract women. This may be done by drinking this medicine to induce vomiting. This medicine can be bought from the traditional healer. It has to be boiled before it can be used.

Incisions are made with a sharpened knife or razor blade. The medicine is then brushed over the cuts to introduce it rapidly into the blood. This is done to make the person strong in a way that diseases cannot get into that person easily.

Gumtree

Cut the branch of a gumtree and boil it. When it is ready pour it in the basin or bucket, cover yourself with a blanket and steam. Steaming can be done when you suffer from influenza, headache and coughs. Steaming may also be done when you have a skin problem.

Isiqunga

This is a type of grass found on the mountains and near the rivers. The root is grinded and mixed with cold water. The person who comes from a funeral has to wash the body (family members) or hands of all the people who attended the funeral with the mixture to chase away evil spirits. Some people mix it with the stomach contents of herbivorous animal.

Isihlungu

Sniffing of powdered medicine may be used to heal headaches.

Kuchathwa ngawo uma unenkinga yesisu noma uphethwe iqolo. Kuyagcatshwa ukuze uvikele izitha kanye nezifo zingangeni kalula.
