Kenyan women have been known to go on a serious rant about Kenyan men not being good enough compared to their Western and Southern African counterparts.
Sigh! What do women want?! That’s the million dollar question…
These are the generic and perhaps cliched characteristics that most Kenyan women look for in a man:
1. A provider
A woman wants to be with a man that is financially stable and can provide for her and your future family (if you cross that bridge). We grew up seeing our mothers take care of the home while our fathers would be the providers and that’s a mentality that’s stuck. Even in modern age dating where women work and split bills, the man is still expected to be the provider in most African cultures.
2. A gentleman
Most women still like the traditional dating acts such as having date nights, tipping the waiter at the restaurant, giving her the lead at the door, holding her hand in public and ensuring that she feels and looks content!
3. A fixer
Women prefer dating a guy who can fix not just stuff around the house but also quick problems that arise. The ‘Don’t worry, i’ll take care of it’ kinda guy.
4. Sense of humor
It’s always a plus if you can make her laugh! Avoid juvenile humor though such as fart jokes till you know each other better.
5. Good cook
If you can wow her with your culinary skills prowess, that’s another plus. Nothing more romantic than a man who is willing to share house chores.
6. Someone that works out and is well groomed
Obviously, women want to be with a well groomed guy. You don’t have to look like Idris Elba but at least keep the beard groomed, have a hair cut, jog on weekends if you can’t afford a gym membership…you know? Take care of yourself. Don’t go walking around with a toothpick in your mouth and a potbelly looking like you have given up on life. #Changamka!
7. Someone that’s witty
Well, you don’t have to be a Harvard graduate or know everything there is to know about quantum physics but at least be in a position to differentiate between the use of your and you’re; be in a position to have a decent conversation with a lady or with her family and work colleagues. Women want to be with men who they can show off to their friends.
8. Have an outgoing personality
You know the kind of guy that can easily switch from office clothes to sneakers for a run and then to a smart casual look for a subtle night out? Women want that kind of a man. One who is flexible and can change his schedule to suit his woman’s because she’s a priority.
9. Someone that loves you even with your flaws
A women wants a man that will not try to change her. You loved the version you met so why try to change her into a different version? Women want guys who can show them off like a trophy to their friends, family and public. A man that will look at her like she’s magic.
10. A man that’s not insecure
A man who keeps blowing up his woman’s phone on a girls night out wanting the details of the night is a man that has no life of his own, and no one wants that kind of a man.
